White Leather & Hemp Matador 9X12' Rug Review

The first thing you should know about this rug is that it is about as white as a caramel latte, which is to say, not white at all. The hemp threads are hemp-colored. The leather strips are off-white on one side and kind of brownish grey on the other, sort of a putty color. The picture shows alternating lines of white with a darker tone, but the actual rug is more random and about 90% of it shows the darker side of the leather. There is a lot of natural variance in tone, and the overall effect is warm.

I can envision this rug being used in a couple of ways. It would look good in a rustic casual room, it has that beachy look that a lot of Pottery Barn rooms have. I can also see it adding texture and warmth to a very modern room. This is a huge rug for a very low price, and what I like best about it is that it's all natural materials. Other large rugs for this price would be made of that "indoor, outdoor" scratchy plastic stuff.

The rug is thin but durable. The mottled texture means it hides dirt very well. It's bumpy underfoot, but in a pleasant way that I enjoy walking on. You won't care if your cats scratch it or your dogs run all over it, you'd never be able to tell. However, I have no idea how to clean it, and big spills would seep through the tiny gaps in the weave, so I wouldn't use it for really messy areas. I've had no trouble wiping up light spills with a paper towel.

The rug comes tightly rolled in a box that isn't overly large. (At first I wondered if they'd sent the wrong size.) It had a strong leather smell at first, but that went away after a few days. It also had some creases from packing; those eventually went away with daily use.
